Reaction to Our 50th Anniversary Reunion:

PLEASE SEND US YOUR THOUGHTS AND REFLECTIONS ON OUR REUNION WEEKEND. THEY WILL BECOME PART OF OUR HISTORY FOR THIS EVENT.

Chuck "Tom" Wickstrom: Awesome to see all of you. It was a blast from the past. Memories that remain forever in my mind and heart, sadness for those friends of mine that have passed on. How fast the evening went. It was a great time. Thanks to all who worked hard to organize the affair. It was wonderful to see so many friends from the past. God Bless.

Gary Coppola:  It was great time having all of you there. Thanks for putting it together. I'm sure that Andy would have really dug it.

Ralph Theriault:  It is a testimonial to our class that so many showed up and that so many had a good time. It was obvious that we enjoyed each others' company. I like our 'format' which begins with an impromptu get-together at a local pub and that we try to have an activity on Sunday; this time meeting at Andy Coppola's studio to spend a few hours where he spent years creating his beautiful artwork.

Ed Wishart: " This was a memorable reunion because there were so many new faces, and it was our 50th. We have only lost twelve from the original class. Both Lola & I HAD A GREAT TIME. THANKS BARB & GINNIE FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK IN PUTTING THIS ALL TOGETHER,YOU BOTH KNOW I LOVE YOU GUYS.

21 OCT 2008:
ART EXHIBITION:
ANDY COPPOLA

Members of the Plainville High School Class of 1958 are invited to a special exhibition of  classmate  Andy Coppola's artwork. Andy's younger brother, Gary has very generously offered to open the facility where some of Andy's sculptures and other works have been stored.

Please join us on Sunday, 26 October at 1PM. The directions were sent in an Advisory e-mail to all classmates who are on-line on Tuesday, 21 October. If you did not receive your directions, please contact Ralph Theriault at

Hope to see you there!

28 OCT 2008:
AFTER THE WEEKEND...

Well, the 50th Reunion is literally history. It was a blast and it certainly met all of my expectations. The Friday evening Impromptu Get-Together was dizzying trying to catch up with everyone. It was good to see everyone there in that cozy and very friendly place. And, it was a 'hoot' to see Pat Pasniewski Haddock and to meet Carole Appruzzeze for the first time.

The superbly-dressed crowd at Saturday night's Dinner exceeded 100 people. Barbara's biggest problem was getting everyone to settle down for dinner and the program. Later, everyone was on

the dance floor singing along with Fats Domino "I found my thrill... on Blueberry Hill...".

I went through an 'inventory of the classmates' in my mind from the list of reservations to see whether I had seen everyone on the weekend and I came up short a few people.  Aside from Bruce Atwood and Bob Whalen who we missed, I missed meeting Jack Haddock as well as Harriet Borajkiewicz Morris, Louise Henne Stokosa and Angela Lepore Nichols. And, although I never met them before, I would have liked to have met Charlotte Rogers Oaks and Marie Shea Cassidy.  Maybe next time...

The classmates in attendance each received a gift from Mr. Gaudette's family to commemorate our 50th Anniversary Reunion... a kind and generous gesture to our class. Thank you, George Jr!

Sunday's Exhibition of Andy Coppola's Art at his studio was profoundly inspiring and fun given Andy's beautiful and prolific collection and given all the personalities who attended including Andy's close friend, Judy Mauzaka. The champagne flowed as we toasted Andy and examined his works. We could absolutely feel his presence as we touched the very forms that had been shaped by his hands. Thank you, Gary and Paule Coppola!! ...and thank you Ginny for organizing this affair. We will certainly write more about that important event. Visit the "Andrew J. Coppola Collection" in "Our Photo Album"  from time to time as we add our photos of the exhibition and his works.  JRT

13 SEP 2008:
A NOTE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM:

Greetings guys!

I have been in touch for some time with Andy Coppola's family regarding the loss of their father recently, and other matters where we've been trying to learn more about Andy's life and career in art. As a result, we now have a very cool section of our website that is devoted to some of Andy's art.

Andy's brother, Gary had told us some time ago that a significant part of Andy's work is in storage and recently, Gary offered to organize a special showing of this art work to the membersof Andy's PHS class.

Gary lives in Canada during the summer and in Florida in the winter. So, he has said that he is willing to come down from Canada for this special showing if there is sufficient interest.

So, if you are definitely interested in seeing Andy's work in this special showing, please let me know NOW and I will follow-up with Gary to make the arrangements. The only possible time for this showing would be the Sunday afternoon of our Reunion Weekend, 26 October.

Let me know, guys.      Ginny

Saturday evening, 17 May 2008.... Here's a little humor from our classmate Bob Bocwinski.... Bob says that this just about covers every politically, morally and socially sensitive approach to explaining why the chicken crossed the road... jrt

Subject: Why did the chicken cross the road?

BARACK OBAMA:
The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE! The chicken wanted CHANGE!

JOHN MC CAIN:
My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON:
When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure -- right from Day One! -- that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.......

DR. PHIL:
The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on 'THIS' side of the road before it goes after the problem on the 'OTHER SIDE' of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his 'CURRENT'
problems before adding 'NEW' problems.

OPRAH:
Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

GEORGE W. BUSH:
We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here.

COLIN POWELL:
Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road...

ANDERSON COOPER - CNN:
We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

JOHN KERRY:
Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it!
It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

NANCY GRACE:
That chicken crossed the road because he's GUILTY! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

PAT BUCHANAN:
To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

MARTHA STEWART:
No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS:
Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY:
To die in the rain. Alone.

JERRY FALWELL:
Because the chicken was gay! Can't you people see the plain truth?'
That's why they call it the 'other side' Yes, my friends, that chicken is gay. And if you eat that chicken, you will become gay too. I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the liberal media white washes with seemingly harmless phrases like ' the other side.
That chicken should not be crossing the road. It's as plain and as simple as that.

GRANDPA:
In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS:
Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of moulting, and went on to accomplish its life long dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE:
It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON:
Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

BILL GATES:
I have just released eChicken2007, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book. Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Chicken. This new platform is much more stable and will never cra...#@&&^(C% .........
reboot.

ALBERT EINSTEIN:
Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

BILL CLINTON:
I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

AL GORE:
I invented the chicken!

COLONEL SANDERS:
Did I miss one?

DICK CHENEY:
Where's my gun?

AL SHARPTON:
Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

30 April 2008.... 'Beauty and the Best' by Plainville Choral Society, 2-3, 9-10 May.

For the next two weekends, the Plainville Choral  Society is producing the play 'Beauty & The Beast' on May 2 & 3, and also on May 9 & 10. The play will be staged at Plainville High School. The show starts at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15.00 at the door or $12.00 if you purchase from us.

Lola has a major role, she is cast as Mrs. Potts for those who are familiar with the show. It's very entertaining. I am just part of the chorus.

So if any one is interested, as they say, COME ON DOWN, LOVE TO SEE YOU.

Your old buddy, ED

24 April 2008....

Thanks to Ginny's efforts to get us all connected and to keep us connected, we are now in touch with Butch Bradley. We would like to welcome Butch to the ranks of the 'Connected'. His e-mail address is listed in the "Let's Keep in Touch" section.  Welcome, Butch!  Send us a note to "check-in" with us... see our "Check-In, Please" section. According to Ginny, Butch lives in Florida and operates a hair salon in Deerfield Beach.  We look forward to seeing you at the reunion, Butch!

In a recent update with some photos from Pat Pasniewski Haddock, we posted a photo of Butch in our 'Photo Album' in the "The Way We Were" section. He was sporting his brand new Air Force uniform and it looks like he had already re-grown his DA haircut!

25 April 2008....

Our most sincere condolences to John Folcik on the death of his father Peter J. Folcik this week. According to Barbara, the wake was yesterday, Thursday, 24th at Plantsville Memorial from 4-8 and the funeral is this morning, Friday 25th at 9:30 at the funeral home, 10:30 mass at Our Lady of Mercy church in Plainville.

John and his family will be in our thoughts and prayers. John's e-mail address may be found on the "Let's Keep in Touch" section.

15 April 2008....

As you can see from the 50th Reunion dialogue below, the date has been set for the reunion:

24, 25, 26 October 2008

...so block that weekend for the reunion and make your plans to come join the rest of us in Plainville.

17 April 2008...

We did receive the family's permission to publish the photos of some of Andy's art work. We now have a new section in our 'Photo Album' titled the "Andrew J. Coppola Collection".  Check it out...  Let me know what you think.   JRT

15 April 2008...

Some time ago, Ginny came in contact with Andy Coppola's family. As a result of that contact, Andy's brother, Gary has touched base with us and has sent us photos of Andy's art work and has provided other information about Andy's life. Please check out Andy's obituary for the update and for a photo of Andy, the sculptor at work. If we receive the family's permission to publish the photos of Andy's work, we will have a 'virtual tour' of his sculptures and other art pieces on this website.

Stay tuned...

We had a meeting at Barbs house.  Joey S, Maskery, Marcantonio, Wishart, Folcik, Verna D and myself.  Freddie and Joey were going to check out 3 places in the local area.  We love the food at Confetti's but Barb and I don't think the restaurant can accommodate our group without being overcrowded.  Perhaps will opt for drinks/hors'deurves at Confetti's on Friday night and breakfast buffet on Sunday.  Maybe Saturday night dinner at Nucci's again.  Their function room accommodated us so nicely the last time and it's so close to Plainville.  Maybe Eddie Wishart may surprise us with some entertainment again?  (another reason why Nucci's would be good/they have the room....Confetti's doesn't)  Barb thinks there will be 100 people attending.  Others not in the class have asked if they can come.............Kenny Gnazzo, Carol Appruzzeze, Sonny Kauke, Butchie Bradley.   No one came forward to plan a picnic at Norton Park................The big question was... What if it Rained?  If others in the class want to come forward and plan the picnic,we'd all go if it didn't rain.  Reunion date........probably the  2nd or 3rd week in October.  Nothing available in September at the restaurants we've chosen.

Did you get any responses from classmates on changes for email or residence addresses?  Seems like I saw you requesting that info a while back.

We're meeting at Barbs in a couple of weeks.

Thinking today (that in itself is a chore now a days) that possibly somewhere within the reunion schedule there might be a memorial of sorts for our 10 fallen classmates. Since I did not attend the last reunion, maybe this was done and is already in the planning stages.

A PHS ’58 50th sounds great!  I would love to attend and will save the date when it’s determined.

Also, I continue to enjoy your wonderful work on our school the web site.  It is so special.  Thank you.

Heard from Linda Kysor Gordon Fore today.  She hopes to attend, too.  I keep in touch with Ruth Perrotti and see her a few time a year.  She sat with Bob and I at the last reunion.

Take care.

It will be wonderful to "try" and do some "50" year catching up.
If there is anything I can do for you from here in the deep

Hi,
I tried sending a note through the '58 website and got kicked out.  I really want to attend the 50th.  Had such a great time last time.

We have our two granddaughters from West Virginia for several weeks in the summer, and we could consider coming east with our RV if the 50th is anytime from June through August.  But anytime is fine as long as it isn't in the winter months.  I can't deal with the cold, snow or ice.  Believe it or not, I find the hot temperatures in Arizona quite comfortable, especially when I can escape to air-conditioning or the pool.

Best wishes,
Marion Ekholm

Subject: 08 Reunion

Thanks for the email regarding the possible 08 reunion.  I don't make it a habit of getting on the web site regularly to catch up on recent news.  I am busier now having being retired for six years.
Sheila and I would love to come to any reunion in 08, or any other time for that matter.
I would prefer not to having during the winter months since I moved to Florida to avoid the cold weather.
News from the Cellecz side is that all is well here.  Our son James and his wife presented us with our first grandson last year.  We actually have two now, since Stephanie brought a 6 year old son into the family.  What a joy they both are.  Fortunately, they live close by, so we can get our hands on them regularly.
We have been in Florida now since 1988.  Time sure flies.  Am still flying, now with our own airplane instead of the "heavies" I flew all over the world.  In fact, we are flying our bird to New England in another week to visit friends, and the return leg will be via Wisconsin to visit Bob and Mary Lee Bocwinski for several days.  We see them occasionally when they are here in the winter at their condo about 45 minutes north of us.  I did see Bob's email regarding the reunion as well as one from Al Anderson. Al and I speak on the phone once in a while.
I suppose that's what has been happening to us in a nutshell.  We can catch up on more details at the reunion.  Ralph, keep up the great work on the website and keep in touch.

Regards,

Paul Cellecz

Subject: PHS Class of 1958-50th Reunion-Great

Know that I will be there, when ever, where ever!

Had a great time last get together and I wouldn't miss the opportunity to see everyone again.

If we could have a similar arrangement as our 2003 reunion, it would really give us plenty of time to talk and share what all has happened in our lives since PHS.  A Friday evening of socializing at a local watering hole, a Saturday evening dinner, and a catered Sunday picnic would certainly round out a weekend.  This would give out-of-towners a chance to catch up on 50 years of news and the locals could pick and chose what events they want to attend.  Besides, such an arrangement should fit any budget and gives enough alternatives for everyone.  Easy for me to say---living 1,500 miles away---and not available to assist with planning and coordinating.  But, you have to admit it would make for a fun weekend!

I look forward to hearing more ideas, but more importantly, to get a date(s) finalized.

Three cheers for JOE D.

Looking forward to the 50th!

If I can talk Jim into going I'll be there.  His class had a nice reunion last yr. at the Whiting House across from the post office.  They did a nice job.  They also had a photographer and bought a disc from the proceeds.  Later the pictures were e-mailed to all who wanted them.  Ida Beraducci and Pat Lostocco and Marilyn Grey and Louie Peckrul were in charge of the arrangements if anyone wants to contact them for more info.  This yr. another reunion is planned for Jim's class, although so far the turnout is low.  It is an all day picnic at Norton Park. Gnazzo's is catering it and the cost is very reasonable .... something like only $15.00 per person.  Ida has been in contact with us again.  I'm not sure who else is working on it.  Good luck planning another event.

Fond regards, Judy

Hi, Can't find the web address for our class, could you e-mail i?  I am not sure if I have been on it since I moved about 3 years ago.  Our new address is Paul & Louise Stokosa...  We actually only moved about ten minutes away from our old house.  We went to Arizona in February to see our son & his family and to celebrate our grandaughter's eighth birtday with her.  We stayed for just a little over two weeks.  Long enough to miss all the bad weather here. Paul and I are both retired but busier than ever.  His 50th class reunion is next year too.  My mom (who is 92) is living with us.  She moved in with us the month after we did.  We see our son and grandson every other weekend.  Our grandson just celebrated his sixth birthday in June.  Let me know about the class reunion.  I know Marion Suess Ekholm was interested.

Thanks Louise H. Stokosa

Oh my, can you believe 50 years. That's a long time. I'm old, I've got to find someting that hurts. Fortunately Carol and I have been blessed with good health. Aside from a few new parts, we are doing well.

My previous suggestion, stay away from summer, graduations, weddings, local events,etc.. In my case, We have a granddaughter graduating from a Montana high school in June plus a military reunion in July. In August I've got to take out the trash, slop the hogs, cut the back forty and criticize all 500 people running for President. Additionally with time permitting, get a haircut. I'm even tired now thinking about August. I may have to skip the haircut. :)

The suggestion of a Labor Day picnic at Norton Park sounds wonderful. Whatever is decided, I will make a special effort this time to attend.

Thanks in advance to all who will be involved in the preparations.

Hello Ginny,
Thank you for your quick response(you too Ralph).I will help in any way I can.
We first have to come up with a date.Maybe Memorial Day weekend with a catered picnic at Norton Park and a dance on the basketball court that night.Talk about memories!!! Ralph, that may alleviate the problem of people not being able to commiserate.
By the way when in Sept is the Hall of Fame function?
My Friends, I can not say it enough times how much you all mean to me.God Bless you.

P.S. Ginny, congrats on catching up with me in the granddaughter dept.Enjoy!

Hi guys,

The silence in the response to your e-mail, Joe is deafening.:)  I think that it's no doubt because both Barbara and Ginny must be out somewhere for their summer vacation.

I think we should have our 50th reunion, if only as a good reason for a fun get-together. The arrangements for the 45th were very good: the get-together on Friday night was alot of fun, the dinner party on Saturday of course and I also especially enjoyed Barbara and Ron's hospitality on Sunday.  The dinner party is very good and of course we need to do it but it's difficult to have any serious (or non-serious) conversations in that kind of setting.

This time we should take special action to draw some of those who didn't make the 45th... perhaps like Bob Zdunczyk, Millie Cambo, Paul Czellecz, Verna Daigle, Anna Mae Grimaldi, Nancy Grizzel, Jack Haddock, Jane Irving, Joe Kratka and Pat Pasniewski, Linda Kysor, Carol Mangan, Fred Mooers, Joel Moss, Judy Nesser, Bob Osgood, Mike Perrotti, Boyd Ripley, Sid Sidlowski, Alicia Schmidt, June Smith, Ruth Szczepanik, Juliet Theriault, John Varone, Barbara Wysocki, Irene Zyla, and others. Maybe a note to each of them with the question:  What would it take to see you at our 50th Reunion?

I hope that all is well with you Joe and your beautiful family.

Fond regards,

Ralph

WAY TO GO, SWEETS !

Just got word from Ginny that the Plainville Sports Hall of Fame finally has posted some photos of  the 2007 induction including photos of Bob Zdunczyk. Please visit the Plainville Sports Hall of Fame website for superb photos in the 'Gallery' of some of our other classmates, teachers  and other athletes.

Here's the write-up on Bob:

Bob with cousin, Frank (left)...Robert "SWEETS" Zdunczyk

Bob graduated from Plainville High School in 1958. 'Sweets' was a three sport athlete who earned ALL STATE honors as captain of the Blue Devil Basketball team. Bob was a forward/center on the hardwood and, was the center point of the beginning of the dominance of Plainville mens basketball during the 1950's and early 1960's. 'Sweets' scored over 860 points and had over 425 rebounds during his PHS career helping his teams to win conference championships and to go deep into the CIAC tournaments. One local paper dubbed Bob "Mr. Basketball" during his years at PHS and he is ranked as one of the greatest basketball players in PHS history. On the baseball diamond Bob was the prototypical power hitting first baseman batting .347 as a senior and leading the Blue Devils in home runs. Bob also was a key member of the track team running middle distance events in between baseball games.

Our hat's are off to you Bob. Congratulations!

OLE 'FW'...   For a very long time, I have been meaning to track down one of my Air Force buddies from my days at Pease AFB in New Hampshire. But I never did. His name was Francis Wayne Conner. We called him "FW". He was a self-proclaimed 'Rebel' (as opposed to 'Yankee') from Clifton Forge, Virginia. He was wild, goofy and a good and loyal buddy.

Chanute AFB, Illinois... learning the airplane business. Our first 'pass' to go off-base... WOW!Recently, Rosemary and I decided to refinish our pine floors which caused me to have to empty my Study. Rosemary calls the room the "I Love Ralph Room".  I was overwhelmed with alot of insecurity. Ah man, all my stuff is in this one room... over 40 years of stuff, momentos, photos, papers, books, awards, diplomas, music, computers, whatever... As I started hauling my stuff out, I ran into many, many diversions including some old 35mm slides I took when I first entered in the Air Force including the one at right of myself and a friend, Decker at tech school at Chanute Air Force Base heading out on our first Pass to downtown Champagne-Urbana, Illinois. (Left click on photo to enlarge.)

As it turns out, our daughter Jill and her husband, Ron gave me a little gizmo that allows me to scan my slides and negatives into my computer. Before I knew it, I was over my head into a project of scanning all of my 600 slides. Funny how you can go from one diversion to another, huh?

Francis Wayne FW Conner... the wild rebel but loyal buddy (1961)As I continued to scan, I found some slides that I took while at Pease Air Force Base, my first assignment out of tech school... slides of my buddies and our wild forays at the beaches and ski slopes of New Hampshire and drinking parties... including slides of ole' FW himself. Most are not printable on a family website except this fuzzy, faded one shown on your left. Wow! What a find! I always wondered how he might be doing. I lost track of him when Rosemary and I married in 1964. So, off I go on another diversion... this is much more fun than taking my Study apart. So, I fired up my research tools that I use for my geneology work to see if I could locate 'FW'.  It took me less than 30 minutes... I found his Social Security record which recorded the fact that he died on Monday, 8 July 1996 in his native Clifton Forge at the age of 55. Bummer... I had already started thinking about how much fun it would be to touch base with him. So by myself in my Study, I opened a bottle of Rolling Rock and toasted my ole' buddy, FW. I'm sure that he's terrorizing someone somewhere. I think there's a lesson to be learned here...

Ironically, here's something I ran into as I was combing through the archives of the Clifton Forge High School Alumni Association in Clifton Forge, Virginia looking for ole' 'FW'.

“Do Something You Want To – TODAY”

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, "How about  going to lunch in a half hour?" She would gasp and stammer, "I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain." And my personal favorite: "It's Monday." She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together.

Life has a way of accelerating, as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of "I'm going to," "I plan on," and "Someday, when things are settled down a bit."

Now...go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to......not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say?  Okay, sounds good... so why are you waiting?

Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry-go-round
or listened to the rain lapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight
or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask "How are you?" Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed
with the next hundred chores running through your head?
Ever told your child, "We'll do it tomorrow."
And in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die?
Just call to say "Hi"?
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....Thrown away...
Life is not a race. Take it slower.
Hear the music before the song is over.

So, this is my thought of the day... don't want to completely bum you out. But it's worth thinking about. Let's turn this downbeat note into one that is upbeat and productive by vowing to all get together this year at our fiftieth anniversary reunion.   JRT

Joe Dellaquila was kind enough to send in a photo of a 'get-together' that he arranged when he and M.J. were last in the area on 9 April. Unfortunately, 'yours truly' blew it by scheduling the wrong date in his calendar. (I hate when that happens!)  Nevertheless, he, Butch Distin, Dave Hiltpold and Joey Segal were able to get together at Confetti's for lunch and a few laughs.

Thanks for thinking of us, Joe. Hope your return flight was uneventful. Give me another shot at it next time you're in the area.  JRT

Tuesday, 27 March 2007... A few notes...
By the way guys, please don't feel badly if you have an 800 x 600 monitor. Just trying to plan ahead... Thanks!
1.  Al Anderson checked-in yesterday with an update. Your timing is impecable, Al!  I was thinking some time ago, that our website is now in its 6th year on-line. Everyone has been great in checking-in but alot can happen in six years. So, guess what?  It is now your turn to contribute to the website. Check-in and give us an update on your happenin's. Come on guys, let's do it! I want to see the hit rate on this site skyrocket!

2.  I originally designed the website for the computer monitors of the 90's that have a minimal screen resolution of 800 by 600. But some of you may now have monitors that are set at a higher screen resolution. Would you let me know what your monitor resolution is set to?

Check your screen resolution by doing the following:  Click your START button, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL, then DISPLAY.  A 'Display Properties' window will open. Then click on the 'SETTINGS' tab. You will see in the left corner of the 'Display Properties' window a "Screen Resolution' area with a pointer set to a certain value. That value is the screen resolution. Let me know if your screen resolution is 800 by 600. Don't change your screen resolution. Just click the 'Cancel' button and the window will close.

If /when everyone is using a higher setting, I will change our website to the next appropriate higher setting. This will widen the useable area of the window and will enhance the resolution of the images and text a little.

My Aunt Joan White class of '58, married my Uncle Ken Theriault.  Ken is my mothers brother...although he died in 1995.  Joan now lives in Florida.

I graduated in '80.

You have a very nice site and it was good seeing some pictures of my aunt and others who were still around when I was going to school.

Thanks for keeping the PHS spirit alive.

Thursday, 26 October 2006... Our good friend, George Gaudette Jr, (the son of another of our good teachers) was kind enough to let us know that we lost another member of faculty in Plainville High School of 1958. Miss Margaret McGrail, this past May 21 at the Camelot Nursing Home in New London. CT. She was 92. A Grave side service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, 15 August at the Stonington Cemetery.  Here is George's note:
"One of your faculty and one of my Dad's good friends. From the Old Lyme and Lyme News (LymeLine.com).

Thursday, 17 August... Here's a message worth listening to.... http://www.thedashmovie.com/  It's all down to the dash. Hmmm...  JRT

Tuesday 15 August 2006... It just occurred to me that my last year with Raytheon in that short assignment to Orange County turned out to be quite a musical event. In addition to rediscovering Johnny Cash, I discovered this most wonderful music program on one of the local FM radio stations, KJAZZ 88.1. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, Chuck Cecil's syndicated program "The Swinging Years" is on the air from 6AM until 9AM. (You can listen to his program from 9-12AM EST at http://www.jazzandblues.org/index.aspx.) In any case, I 'rediscovered' many of my old favorites including Jo Stafford.

I thought I would share this experience with you. So, it's out with Johnny Cash and in with Jo Stafford. I had a huge crush on her as a 13 year old in 1953 while still living in northern Maine... years later, in 1982, a good friend Bill Powell who was the pianist at the Alisal Ranch in Santa Ynez, CA, introduced me to her when she came for her annual vacation at the ranch with her husband, Paul Weston, the band leader. I could hardly speak to her... and my knees got all wobbly. WOW!

Hope you enjoy Jo as much as I do... if not, wait a few months, the music will change again.    JRT

Sunday 6 August 2006... Just received word from Paul Maskery that Coach Palmer passed away Monday morning, 10 July at the age of 81. A Grave side service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, 15 August at the Stonington Cemetery.  More on the Faculty page... JRT

Pat V.'Coach' Riera
Hartford Courant

RIERA, Pat "Coach" V., 79, of Plainville, passed away at Plainville Health Care Center on Thursday, (March 9, 2006) from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was the beloved husband of Marguerite Blackmore. He was born in New Britain on April 4, 1926, to the late Vincent and Delores (Sendra) Riera.

Pat was a legendary basketball player and coach. He started his sports career as a star for the New Britain High teams from 1942 to 1944 winning All State honors and All-New England honorable mention.

After high school, he served his country in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1944 during World War II in the Pacific Theater as a Drill Sergeant.

Following his wartime service, he returned to his passion of basketball earning the title as the Most Valuable Player while on the Varsity Basketball team at Arnold College.

After his time at Arnold, he began his coaching career that lead to championships and success year after year during which he completed his Masters Degree from Springfield College. Coach started with fine teams at Plainville High, with the Blue Devils winning two Class M Titles in 1959 and 1961 and were runner-ups on two other years. On two occasions they had two 29 game winning streaks. They also won four Central Valley Conference Titles and one Colonial League Championship.

For his accomplishments, Pat was inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall-of-Fame in 1991. Through the years, Pat was also the head coach for New Britain High and was inducted into the New Britain Sports Hall-of-Fame on March 7, 1996. He also enjoyed several years in college coaching as the Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach at Central Connecticut State University.

He is dearly loved by his family, many friends and especially the students who still fondly remember him as "Coach".

Besides his loving wife Marguerite, Pat leaves behind his son, Michael Riera, his wife Megan and their two children Lucia and Sam Riera of Berkeley, CA; his son, Peter Riera, his wife Lisa and their three children Patrick, Stephen and Daniel Riera of Southington, his son, Timothy Riera of New Haven; his step-son, Peter Hindle and his wife Erica of Rocky Hill; David Sorel, who he loved like a son, and his wife Barbara of Southington; and his brother, Vincent Riera of Plainville. Saturday, 25 February 2006... Trying to catch up with my email. Received a neat email from Joe D a couple of weeks ago, passing on a link to the Plainville Sports Hall of Fame. I've included the link in our school website.

The site is very well organized and superbly produced. You will see most of our coaches and even a few teachers, e.g., Miss Grant.

Sunday, 5 Feb 2006...   I enjoyed some of Johnny Cash's hits starting back in high school but can't say that I was a big fan of his. This all changed several months ago when NPR's Terry Gross ("Fresh Air") played back an interview with Johnny Cash that she  recorded in 1998. (You may listen in on the interview on NPR at: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5026595

I gained an appreciation for the man because it was really the first time that I had heard him talk about his life, music and family to any extent. He was eight years older than most of us but really grew up during the same era. He started his career with Sam Phillips of Sun Records at the same time that Elvis and other of our favorite singers started. So, he is really a key pop figure of our generation. Johnny's second wife was June Carter who was with him from the beginning of his music career. June died in May 2003 and Johnny later in October of the same year. Their love affair is beautifully presented in the movie "Walk the Line".

Last week, Rosemary and I went to see the movie which stars Joachim Phoenix as Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. Having heard the interview, the movie was especially meaningful. It is a terrific love story and movie. The acting is splendid. Joachim and Reese did a great job.

So... inspired by all of this, I thought that we had listened to Sam Cooke long enough on this website and I changed out all of the background music on our website. I hope that you enjoy Johnny Cash. The selection ranges from some of his earliest hits in the 1956 through 1958 timeframe as well as some of his later material.  Listen in to Johnny and June's 'Jackson' on the "Our Great Class" page.

Just as a reminder, the fidelity of these recordings are less than CD quality because of the space restrictions on our website. Actually, I think the sound quality is very 'retro' because it is roughly the fidelity of the old Ford and Chevy radios in the 1940's. :) Using a technique that I 'jerry-rigged' using a combination of WAV file format and MP3 compression, I am able to put up MP3 files in the WAV format at one-tenth the size of the original MP3 file. As an example, Jo Stafford's 'You Belong to Me' in its original form is a 3022Kbyte MP3 file which I convert to a WAV file upload to my website server in Virginia as a 426KByte WAV file. Obviously, these smaller files download to your computers much faster and I am able to save much of the fidelity.

Let me know what you think.  -JRT

Sunday 29 January 2006... Just received word that our Miss Grant passed away this past week. If anyone has any further information about Miss Grant or information on how to contact the family, please let me know.

Many thanks for the kind words regarding my dad. In lieu of a biography, maybe the eulogy that I gave at my dad's funeral will do. I've attached a copy that I think it sums up his life the way he would have wanted, and clearly the way in which my mom would have wanted. Thanks again for memorializing my father. He genuinely loved Plainville HS and it's students. His time at PHS was a period of his life that he spoke about often and that, with out a doubt, had a positive effect on my sisters and me.

Thanks Plainville High class of '58.

Dear Blue Devils Class of '58:

My name is George Gaudette Jr. My dad was your class advisor and an IA teacher / Guidance Counselor at Plainville High. I was only 3 years old in 1958 but I have great memories a few years later accompanying my dad to various functions at your school.

He loved his time at Plainville HS and spoke of it often as the job he enjoyed the most throughout his career. Undoubtedly that must have had something to do with his memories of the class of '58.

My dad passed away in 2001 at the age of 81. He wasn't much into computers; but I'm sure he would have really enjoyed your web site. I only regret that I didn't come across it before he passed away. I'm sure he would have liked to contact several members of the class.

Best regards to all of you as you approach your 50th reunion. My dad will be there with you all.

Regards,

George Gaudette Jr.
