IN MEMORIAM

ANDREW J. COPPOLA

Anonymous words taken from Andy's burial stone

Andy in his studio working on Star DancerAndy was born on Monday, 6 January 1941. As many of his classmates know, his work was art; specifically, sculpture. According to his family, Andy studied at the Hartford Art School under Wolfgang Behl just as the school was merging with the Hart School of Music and Hillyer College to form the University of Hartford. He later took up residence in Hartford on Hudson Street. He received several scholarships to study sculpture and bronze casting in Perugia,Italy north of Rome for which he was listed in Who's Who. In his three years aboad, he loved to travel throughout Italy and Greece but he especially loved Venice.

We remember Andy as a kind, happy person and a good and loyal friend; sometimes mischievous especially in his art and drawings and always ready for a good laugh. (See Andy's caricature of Joe Dellaquila's 'Royal R' band in the 'Graffitti' section of Our Scrapbook.) He worked at his studies quietly and successfully. There was a serious side to Andy especially when talking about art.

In the mid-sixties, Andy was diagnosed with kidney problems and his health went into decline. His kidney function was seriously diminished and so he required dialysis beginning in 1969. It is interesting to note and a tribute to his character, that Andy was most creative and most prolific in the following 20 years when his health was at its worst. As noted in our section on the "Andrew J. Coppola Collection", some of his art continues to be exchanged on the market today although much of his work was kept by the family and a few close friends.Burial stone of Andy Coppola in Hartford.... an inscription on the stone reads as follows: The perfect man is selfless, the holy man seeks no rewards, the sage lives in anonymity

In the end, Andy went into a coma and died on Monday, 10 December of 1990. He was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetary on Fairfield Avenue in Hartford. Andy was survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Andrew Coppola, Sr and his two brothers, Lewis (class of 1961) and Gary (class of 1968). Andy did not have any children. We are very grateful to Andy's younger brother, Gary who was kind enough to provide some of the information about Andy.

The "Andrew Coppola Memorial Endowed Scholarship" was established in 1991 at the University of Hartford in Andy's memory.

According to Andy's family, there were five crates of sculpture that were shipped from Italy to the family in Connecticut.  Some of his work (which was done in wood) is of cellos and violins.

We are honored to display in 'virtual form' some of Andy's work in a special section of our website that is dedicated to Andy's collection.
