This section is devoted
to an exhibition of some of the work of our classmate Andy Coppola. We
continue to work with his family in our effort to document his life and
his works.
We
all knew Andy for his serious nature but also for his mischief and great
sense of humor. Some of his Alfred E. Newman art and the caricatures that
he produced during his high school years were hilarious. When Andy and
his cohort, Chuck Venturi collaborated, great art was in the making. An
example is his caricature of Jimmy Rudolph with the 'Reggie' cap and his
accordion. Jimmy was then a member of Joe Dellaquila's 'Royal R's' rock
'n roll band as you remember. This sketch was taken from the larger caricature
of the Royal R's band.
There were three important phases to Andy's career:
first, his years of study at the Hartford Art School under Wolfgang Behl.
Behl taught at the Hartford Art School for many years and was well-known
in the 'art world' for his abstract though recognizable art form. Behl's
influence on Andy can be seen in one of Andy's work in acrylics which he
produced in 1960 while studying under Behl. (See the exhibit
"Forme e spazi di un paesaggio" below.) Second, Andy spent several years
studying in Perugia, Italy on several scholarships learning sculpture in
wood and bronze castings. His work in wood during this period included
studying the construction of cellos and violins. Third, were his most prolific
and creative years from 1969 until his death in December 1990.
We have prepared a program with audio titled
"Andrew J. Coppola Art Exhibit" from a set of photos that were taken
during a Special Exhibit that the Coppola family arranged for Andy's classmates
and friends on Sunday, 26 October 2008. We want to thank Gary and Paule
Coppola and Andy's close friend and model, Judy Mauzaka for their kind
generosity and hospitality upon inviting the Class of 1958 to the exhibit.
Thanks also to Ginny Hill Noel for working with the Coppola family to coordinate
this great event on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary Reunion of our
class. The photos were those shared by the Coppola family and classmates
Bob Bocwinski, Fred Breyer, Joe Dell'Aquila and Ralph Theriault .
