• Biography: Charles Terriot (II) (Charles, Joseph, Claude, Germain, Claude, Jehan) was an only son of Charles Terriot and Ann Blondeau dit Verbois. He was born in the winter of 1796 in the village of Rivière Ouelle of the colony of Lower Canada on the south shore of the St-Lawrence River. He was a member of a growing community of Acadian descendants whose grandparents had fled Acadia in the years of the expulsion. Although several of his uncles and aunts were Acadians who remembered and no doubt talked about their 11 month trek from Beaubassin, Charles was a French Canadian raised in a French Canadian culture and with a French Canadian mother. His father Charles, an Acadian by blood, was born and raised about 20 miles up river in Saint Roch des Aulnies.
Six years before Charles (II) was born, his second cousin (once-removed) Joseph R (Joseph Jean, Joseph, Germain, Claude, Jehan) had just arrived in the new settlement of Saint Basile in the Madawaska territory from the lower St-John River to join other Acadians recently settled there. The settlement was becoming well established and no doubt there was much talk in Charles' family about the Acadians in Madawaska, the fertile St-John River valley, the growing timber business and the prospect for land ownership. In Lower Canada, there was increasing concern about farm lands as the population was growing and as the influx of Acadians increased over the past 20 years. The feudal tenure system was still well in place in the seigneuries along the St-Lawrence and would not be abolished until 1854. As Charles approached his adolescence around 1810, the sounds of war again could be heard on the western horizons as the Americans made a final attempt to rid the North American continent of the English. Certainly Charles' family was aware of the war and probably saw some of the activity by the British Navy on the St-Lawrence River that was associated with the war. But by the time that Charles (II) emerged from his adolescence into manhood in 1815, the war was over.
During this time, Charles (II) probably worked for his father on a farm in Rivière Ouelle that was either granted to his father or to his mother's family. As he met his future bride, Léocadie Gagnon in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière (which is about 5 miles west of Rivière Ouelle), Charles (II) no doubt continued thinking of migrating south to the Madawaska territory. As the only son, he must have been very conflicted in this decision. His father was now approaching 60 years of age and both of his parents would soon require support. Nevertheless, Charles (II) and Léocadie married in August of 1821 in Sainte-Anne de la Pocatière and finalized their plans to emigrate to the wilderness of the Madawaska territory which at that time was neither in the new colony of New Brunswick nor part of the United States although both were claiming the area. One month later, his younger sister, Apolline and Pierre Plourde married and continued their lives in the area.
Charles (II) and Léocadie decided to avoid the risks and hazards of portaging to the Madawaska territory with a young infant and set out to make the 100 km trek to the Madawaska territory before Léocadie became pregnant with their first child. They settled and claimed a piece of land formed by the southern bank of the Madawaska River and the western bank of the Trout River about ten miles west of the St-John River. The only settlers there at this early time were one or two retired British soldiers from the War of 1812, the MacDonald brothers. They may have offered shelter to Charles and Léocadie at least until Charles had time to raise a small log bungalow. Soon after their arrival, their first child Dolphis was born on 12 December 1823. He was baptized two days later in St-Basile with Mr. Pierre Mercure and Rose Cyr of St-Basile helping Léocadie as the godparents. Charles was not in attendance no doubt working on clearing land for his crops the following year. Two years later, again in the winter, a second son, Prudent was born on 21 November 1825. He was baptized the next day in St-Basile with Mr. Jean-Baptiste Babin and Mrs. Marguerite Martin of St-Basile helping as godparents. Again, Charles was not in attendance no doubt working on clearing land for his crops.
Sometime during the next year in 1826, Charles' sisters, Josette and Apolline, their husbands and children decided to join them in the Madawaska territory. The jurisdiction of the territory whether an American possession of British possession remained unsettled and some friction was beginning to heat up as the two powers began to realize the wealth of the region in timberland. The Americans made some inroads into the territory in the area of present-day Baker Brook but it was eventually resolved with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842. In the meantime, Charles continued to work on clearing his land as Pierre Plourde found an available claim directly across the Madawaska River from Charles' land. Jean Saint-Onge and Josette apparently lived with Charles at least until some time after 1831. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the following year when Léocadie delivered their third child which was still-born. Léocadie did not survive the birth. Without a doubt, Charles' sisters, Josette and Apolline reorganized to care for the boys while Charles continued to do his work. Also, Charles (I) who was now 64 years of age and his wife, Ann came down to live with them for a short period of time until Charles remarried four years later in 1831 with a woman from St-Anne de Madawaska whose name was Rose Ouellette. This freed up Josette to better focus on her family.
Eventually, the Saint-Onge's would take over the claim left by one of the MacDonald brothers who was Charles' neighbor to the west. In 1831, two American surveyors, Deane and Kavanagh came through on behalf of the new state of Maine survey the upper St-John valley. At that time, they found Charles with 30 acres of cleared and cultivated land with a house and a barn. Pierre across the river, had 20-30 acres of cleared land and no mention is made of the Saint-Onges until the Census of 1851 when Josette and her family was identified as living on their land bordering Charles land to the west. Unfortunately, her husband Jean died in 1840 at a very young age. Josette was 46. She would not remarry.
In 1842, the international boundaries were resolved and the Madawaska territory north of the St-John River was determined to be part of the colony of New Brunswick. At the time, Charles applied for a grant from the New Brunswick government in Fredericton on behalf of his elder son, Dolphis. In 1848, the grant was awarded. Some time later, they also filed for a grant on behalf of Prudent which was also awarded.
Around the time that Dolphis received his grant, he decided to build a larger and finer home on the 'Chemin du Portage' which had been built in 1831. The road connecting the St-John Valley with the St-Lawrence areas and running along the Madawaska River and Temisquata Lake significantly opened commerce to the St-John Valley. The 'Chemin du Portage' eventually became 'Chemin du Canada' and Rue Principale in St-Jacques. The new home would now allow Charles to bring his father and mother to live with the family.
With Charles' sons now in their early 20's, they eventually found their future brides and so, Prudent in 1850 married Jean Berubé's daughter, Obeline. The two settled on Prudent's land a few miles downstream from Charles and Dolphis' land. They would eventually have seven children. Dolphis married a girl from St-Basile, Christine Soucy in 1854 and they too settled on Dolphis' land with Dolphis' father and his grandparents. To ease the burden, Charles (II) decided to move in with Prudent and there, spent the remainder of his days in retirement, helping Prudent and his family. Charles (I) and Ann spent the rest of their days living with Dolphis. Only one year after living with Dolphis, Ann died and was buried in St-Basile. Charles (I) died two years later in 1851 and of course was also buried in St-Basile. Around this time, Charles' second wife, Rose Ouellette died on 31 March 1851.
Dolphis and Christine were blessed with six children (four sons and two daughters). Again, tragedy struck the family when after Christine delivered their last son, Adolphe, she developed complications apparently from the birth and died less than a month later on 1 November 1862. With six young children all under the age of six years, Dolphis asked his two cousins, the daughters of Pierre and Apolline Plourde to raise his four youngest children. He would keep Vital and Michel, the two oldest boys. Accordingly, Caroline Plourde and her husband David Rousseau took Joseph (4) and Claudia (1) and Adeline Plourde and Pascal Morneault took Pélagie (2) and Adolphe, who was a new-born infant. The four were raised to adulthood by the Rousseau and the Morneault families.
Charles continued to live a good, long life until
the age of 84 when he died in the spring of 1880 on April 2. He was buried
in the new parish of St-Jacques in the cemetery behind the chapel.

• Biography: 134,196,213,214,215 Pierre Plourde's long, healthful and successful life was organized into four periods; Pre-Madawaska Period:1801-1825; Madawaska River Period: 1825-1850; Iroquoise River Period: 1850-1875; St-Joseph Period: 1875-1899.
In the first period, Pierre developed his life working for his father, Pierre senior who was close friends with the Charles-Marie Thériault family in Kamouraska. Pierre senior was godfather to Charles Terrieau, Charles-Marie's son. In this period, Pierre married one of Charles-Marie's daughters, Apolline, and their first son, Ignace was born in 1825 just before they decided to join Charles in the Madawaska territory.
In the second period, Pierre and Apolline joined Apolline's sister, Josephte "Josette" and her husband Jean Saint Onge and their year old son to join Charles and Léocade who had settled on some land in the Madawaska territory about 3-4 years earlier. The three couples supported each other as they each developed their respective properties: Charles and Léocade had settled and cleared a 30 acre lot on the corner of land formed by the Madawaska River and the Trout River. The Saint Onge's settled immediately west of Charles' land and the Plourde's settled directly across the Madawaska River from the Terrieau's land. They cleared their lands for crops and cultivated the lumber for local building and for export to Europe.
In the third period, as related by the Morneault family history, Pierre and his sons discovered a fall on the Iroquoise River which flowed though the northern end of the land. Pierre thought the fall ideal for a mill and thus, claimed an additional property for the mill. Around 1840, Pierre and his growing sons built a flour and wool mill and no later than 1850, he built a saw mill which is documented in the Census of 1851.
In the third period, Pierre decided to give his first land to Ignace, their elder son and build a second home on the Iroquois River close to the mills. This location came to be known as Plourde Office and a hub of commercial activity. Later in this period, his son-in-law, Pascal who had married Adeline Plourde died of pleurisy, leaving Adeline with seven young children, the oldest being Charles who was 10. Pierre and Apolline decided to move in with Adeline and her children to support and keep the family functioning. Pierre turned over his house and mills to his youngest son, Jules in exchange for old age support later. At about the time that Charles turned 15 years old, Apolline died at the age of 77. Since Charles was now old enough to support his family, Pierre moved out to plan the next and last phase of his life.
In the fourth period, Pierre acquired additional land further north in St-Joseph where he built another house and other buildings and began clearing his land for crops. During this period in 1878 at the age of 77, he met and married a woman from Ste-Rose du Dégélé named Elisabeth Thériault, Benoit Ouellet's widow and brought she and her children still living with her to St-Joseph where they continued their life until Pierre died 22 years later in 1899.
